PRESS RELEASE: 2 Major Newspaper Endorsements Boost Cantwell Momentum

October 12, 2012

First joint appearance with Baumgartner yields overwhelming recommendation for Cantwell reelection

SEATTLE – As Washington state’s US Senate contenders prepare for a statewide public television debate later today, the Everett Herald announced this morning it “strongly recommends” reelecting Senator Cantwell for her diligence and focused commitment to growing jobs and our economy. Just one week after the candidates’ first joint appearance of the campaign before their editorial board, the paper opined:

“Sen. Maria Cantwell, who is seeking her third term, continues to exhibit the leadership, ballast, work ethic, and farsightedness of the consummate lawmaker. She stands as a steady, thoughtful voice in Washington, a proponent of small business, manufacturing, the environment, and Wall Street reform.”

Today’s endorsement follows just one day after receiving the endorsement of the Tacoma News-Tribune, which also offered high praise for Senator Cantwell’s no-nonsense, tireless advocacy on behalf of issues of import to Washington state:

“Since the economy went south, she has focused with laser-like intensity on creating jobs, helping business and pushing for Wall Street reforms. Cantwell isn’t one for partisan bickering, instead working to educate her colleagues and build coalitions for legislation that is often more wonky than ‘sexy.’ Prime examples are her efforts to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank, an agency that helps finance exports of many manufacturers, including Boeing; to pass tax credits for employers who hire veterans; and to invest in freight and transportation infrastructure.”

“Senator Cantwell is humbled to earn these endorsements for her tireless advocacy to create Washington jobs – from apples to aerospace – along with her vision to grow jobs and boost Washington exports in the future,” said Cantwell campaign spokesman Kelly Steele. “Maria’s willingness to put her head down and get things done, even in the face of great dysfunction in Washington, DC – whether that means working across the aisle or standing up to Tea Party extremism – has served our state well.”
