Kitsap Sun (Editorial) - Her challenger has the potential to be a capable U.S. senator — but Maria Cantwell is already doing that and has earned another term.
Republican state Sen. Michael Baumgartner of Spokane has a strong background in diplomatic and advisory service in Iraq and Afghanistan that would be a plus on international issues, and some fresh, common-sense ideas on domestic priorities. He'd be a strong contender if running against an ineffective incumbent.
But that's not the case. Serving in the Senate since 2001, Cantwell has maintained a sharp and effective focus on issues she feels matter most to constituents and Washington as a whole. In 2003, she authored identity-theft protections that were signed into law. She was a leader in successful efforts to win Boeing a $35 billion Air Force tanker contract last year, creating 11,000 Washington jobs. Annually, she's a watchdog on maintaining an IRS deduction for our state sales tax and introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at making it permanent.
Cantwell co-sponsored a bill giving veterans better access to college, and is pushing for more opportunities for laid-off workers and veterans to get valuable job training at community colleges. She's also a strong supporter of increasing Pell Grants to help enable more low-income and middle-class students attend college.
In her editorial board interview, Cantwell described herself as a "workhorse" for constituents. "When it comes to issues we care about, I have a very good record," she said.
We agree, and recommend voters re-elect Maria Cantwell.
